Some of the guys who run the band's label from the U.K., Inhaler Records, took notice and I got a request to do a video for a new song from HNMTF's upcoming album "Black Shark". I was suprised, but was totally up for it as well! Started recording some scenes in late June, even made a makeshift tripod with a music stand so I could record myself dancing at the creek behind my house. I went over to Flemingsburg to shoot some more scenes with the help of some friends of mine, which makes up the majority of the video. Overall it was really a pleasure to do music video for one of my favorite bands! (There was actually additional footage I recorded with more friends in late August, which took place out in the woods of Hillsboro, but wasn't used.)

Just made this video recently, and I owe such an idea all to Dell Webcam Central, which can let you do a bunch of awesome shit like slow motion, werewolf transformation, that "seeing double" video effect, etc. I used my creativity with the program to make a music video for a Gyoza song, and ended up recording a bunch of footage in the time span of about 2 hours. I went on to edit the footage, and the very next day I was able to complete it. It served as a great time killer too, as I was imprisoned in my home thanks to another snow storm.

Music videos sure are loads of fun to create, especially when you don't have to pay a dime to make them! You may even discover a new favorite band from this list, so without further ado, here's my favorite albums from 2010!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_g9uqnEN8hoM/TQ_c7nE0RLI/AAAAAAAAAGo/VhnXlrbMUAo/s320/Constants-If-Tomorrow-the-War.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552899782230688946" />

Constants - If Tomorrow The War (Science Of Silence)

RIYL: Jesu, Godflesh, Junius, City of Ships, Cave In, (later) Traindodge

I got into Constants towards the middle of this year, thanks to hearing them from my favorite music blog Exploding In Sound. From past releases, they played a blend of shoegaze, post rock, and prog rock. On this album however, Constants has definitely become more heavier, which isn't a suprise considering they got Justin Broadrick to produce this!

On top of that, Will Benoit's vocals are higher in the mix and more melodic, drumming is faster and more dynamic, guest vocals (or better yet SCREAMS) from Andrew Neufeld of Comeback Kid and Mike Hill from Tombs bring a hardcore element to some songs , and plenty of outer-worldly synths back up this fantastic record. I feel like I'm being abducted everytime I hear "Halloween In New Orleans"!

If Tomorrow The War is beyond a doubt my favorite record from 2010. Good work Constants, a.k.a. the Undisputed Kings of Space Rock

Listent to it now!

Halloween In New Orleans/The Sun, The Earth Live Performance

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_g9uqnEN8hoM/TQ_i_OjPt8I/AAAAAAAAAGw/I6ZYS0IadhY/s320/Look-What-I-Did-Atlas-Drugged.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552906441436673986" />

Look What I Did - Atlas Drugged (Modernist Movement)

RIYL: Mike Patton, Botch, Dillinger Escape Plan, Dog Fashion Disco, sElf, Born Empty

I also happened to have discovered this band this year, but it wasn't until a couple of months ago that I started listening to this truely creative hardcore band. The first time I saw the vid for their song "Fade to Daft", I thought "A heavier Self? Awesome!" This and other mentioned bands from the RIYL slot is what really got me into Look What I Did, so I went ahead and started listening to their new album "Atlas Drugged".

This album really likes to mix mathcore brutality with clever pop sensibility; it's no 1-trick-pony for sure! Everything from abrasive screams to hip-hop beats to jazzy chords to crazy time signatures to catchy vocals and so on make up this stunning record. Look What I Did is definitely not your average hardcore band, which is much needed in today's state of music!

Music Vid For Serf Song

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 310px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_g9uqnEN8hoM/TRDwaNLx7TI/AAAAAAAAAHA/xZNUtzcRSZY/s320/violent_soho420-420x0.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5553202673554156850" />

Violent Soho- s/t (Ecstatic Peace)

RIYL: Nirvana, Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins, Planes Mistaken For Stars, early 90s rock

I first discovered this Aussie grunge 4-piece from the first music compilation Exploding In Sound released last year, hearing their song "Love Is A Heavy Word". Unfortunately I kind of forgot about them, up until having the opportunity of seeing them live with The Bronx this year. One week before the show, I started listening to stuff from their upcoming self-titled album, and this time I surely wouldn't forget about Violent Soho!

This record actually features several re-recorded songs from their first album, "We Don't Belong Here", but also some brand new ones. Throughout the album, their are plenty of great grunge riffs, distorted bass, and vocals that are reminiscent of early 90s rock, but also some more relaxed acoustic passages in a couple of songs. There's also some screams that kind of remind me of post-hardcore bands like PMFS. Overall, I'd say this is more of an album the owes alot to the live sound of the band, which is a good thing since this band kicks ass live!

Even got a signed record at the show!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_g9uqnEN8hoM/TRDvPZ7305I/AAAAAAAAAG4/rH_iWUB9eyI/s320/IMG_0550.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5553201388486906770" />

Music vid for "Son Of Sam"

More albums on the way!

Gyoza- Live Demos (2010)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_g9uqnEN8hoM/TQ5sgcgR8vI/AAAAAAAAAGg/qyfIS3wAcDc/s320/Live%2BDemos_edited-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552494695257600754" />

http://www.mediafire.com/file/ss944n60bwal0p5/Live.rar

1. 56
2. It happens to be off their score of the zombie-movie classic "Dawn of the Dead".

(it sure would be interesting if you walked in a movie theater before a movie, and all of a sudden, the narrator for MovieTunes or whatever it's called announced that this song would be playing next!)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 217px; height: 212px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_g9uqnEN8hoM/TJ0vMeFh2WI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/lVrKT8NyPC8/s320/COS_TMB_COVER.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5520620609507285346" />

http://www.cityofships.com/2010/09/new-7/

When you buy City of Ships's new 7" record "Three Mile Bridge/South Laurel", or just download it digitally, you also get their cover of "Don't Save Us From The Flames" by french shoegaze/dream-pop band M83. It's originally from the M83 album "Before the Dawn Heals Us".

(...and reminds self to start listening to said album sometime soon)

It's great to find out when your top artists pay homage to some of their own favs. You also find new music this way, and this situation has definitely happened to me on more than one occasion. (another new song)

It appeared that Rob Smith (Traindodge/Roma 79/Riddle Of Steel) was backing up TLAT! He played keyboard and guitar (yet no percussion, what he's usually known for). Wish I went up front for this one, despite the set being brief.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_g9uqnEN8hoM/TIUdx3ZFukI/AAAAAAAAAF4/GwxvRBLJrRU/s320/IMG_0505.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5513846061305018946" />

Russian Circles setting up

1. Harper Lewis
2. Malko
3. Carpe
4. Hexed All
5. Death Rides A Horse
6. Geneva

This was when I got up front, and I'm very glad I did. Russian Circles opened up with the first song I had ever heard by them, and still one of my all-time favorites!
They then went into Malko, which is also a favorite, though I wasn't too pleased with the harsh, high-pitched keyboard part Brian Cook played (probably because I was right next to the stage speaker!). I believe the next 2 songs they played were Carpe and Hexed All. Both sounded great, and I was suprised that Russian Circles played one of their softer songs. Then came Death Rides A Horse, with all the unforgettable riffs that got them established in the underground-metal world. They closed with Geneva, which is probably my favorite Russian Circles song at the moment, so overall I was widely impressed with the performance. It also sort of brought back memories of the Isis & Pelican show I went to a year before (since they are all referred to as post-metal bands). Nonetheless, EPIC

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_g9uqnEN8hoM/TIUgqO1-iXI/AAAAAAAAAGA/ODPYep9dZZI/s320/IMG_0519.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5513849228696127858" />

...and so it got even more epic!

1. Farewell
2. Rainbow
3. 8
4. Luna
5. Statement
6. Floor Shaker
7. A bao a qu
8. 16:47:52
9. Akirame Flower
10. Pink
11. Korosu
12. 1970
13. Untitled (from Smile)
I think this is what the setlist was, I went to setlist.fm and most of the sets of this tour look the same so I'll go with this.

Though I've really only listened to Heavy Rocks, Pink, and Smile, I definitely did not want to miss out on seeing Boris, for I'm up for anything they play (whether it's drone-y sludge to stoner rock to experimental shoegaze). All I can say to sum up this performance is OUTOFTHISWORLDAMAZING! From the fog filling up the ballroom to the big Orange and SUNN amps, Boris was the absolute best that night, as well as the best band I've seen perform at Southgate House. Like I said, I'm mostly familiar with their more hard-rock/stoner stuff, so when they went into Statement, I found myself wanting to just move to the music even more, and there were definitely others feeling the same way. This was were the first mosh-pit occured, though it wasn't as intense compared to the trifecta of Pink, Korosu, and 1970 (my 3 favorite Boris songs!) I witnessed. Even with the moshing that went on as Boris played, there were also more relaxed songs. I can't remember the song that Wata was singing and Atsou was doing unique percussion on, but I really enjoyed it, though there were some that started to talk due to the lack of heaviness. They closed with what I believe is "Untitled", the last song on their latest album "Smile". It leans to more of their sludgey/drone side of Boris spectrum, and up to the ending nearly everyone had their hands in the air, everything from horns to applause. Finally, Atsou dived into the crowd, with the rest of the band leaving the stage.

I feel I could go on for how much I was impressed with this show, but I'll just stop here for now. Can't wait for anohter show that will be as incredible as this one!

It's been a long time....

Well, I figured I'd get back to writing on this blog again, and actually bring back something I've been meaning to do since last winter: continue the "Latest Listening" feature of this blog. And I shall do so, because at the end of the week, Constants is putting out their new album "If Tomorrow The War" for free download (that is, for eveyone that pre-ordered the limited vinyl!) I've been eagerly awaiting it's release ever since I got into Constants this summer, streaming the shit out of "Your Daughter's Eyes" and "The Sun, The Earth" from their teaser site and Myspace while getting into their previous releases as well. I'm really thinking that this will be their best album to date!

Oh, and another new thing I just thought of as I was writing this post, doing reviews of recent live shows I've attended. I know, I don't go to shows every week or anything, but I'm sure as hell lucky to be seeing Boris, Russian Circles, and The Life & Times (2nd time!) tomorrow at the historic Southgate House. RCH pretty much inspired me to start Gyoza, and I also got the position of drum programmer for the band when my brother was making the debut album "Nebraska". It later got scraped, until now...

About a year later I started to add some additional percussion to the old RCH tracks, giving them this electronica type of feel, whereas the guitar parts were pretty sludgy. I didn't really do anything afterward up until recently, today in fact! I kind of remixed the songs I worked on, and even found some more to spruce up, so now there's 7 RCH tracks I plan on releasing really soon, probably on Last.fm first. 6 of those tracks will be "Nebraska", while another will be on an upcoming Superlative Clamor compilation (more news on that later). Now I need to tell Mike about this and see what he thinks of the old project, and see if there might be any future plans.

Ultimate Idea

So I've decided that I'm going to start making my own podcasts about my recent music
listenings/discoveries! I just love it! It's really keeping my project more alive than before, though still not much feedback has arrived. I hope that's just because of it being the early stages.

Which brings me to the topic of a "music video". It's quite a wintry featurrete, creating a lost feeling, which relates to the song itself. I may have to put in some lyrics later as well. But anyway, for now it's a spacey, noisey instrumental in the drop-d variety, and the song was actually created out of improvisation on my DL4 while I was recording with my 4-track once again (also did the same with M-Chee). The bad part would probably have to be me trying to improvise drums via drum machine, and it's a little sloppy at parts for that, but there are some shining moments of percussion in there.

If your reading this, the video will arrive soon, and the song will also be on the upcoming Gyoza album that's still untitled.

Metamorphic

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 254px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_g9uqnEN8hoM/S3cXp_12d9I/AAAAAAAAAEk/rY1IvvAoMX0/s320/Metamorphic.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437841085352540114" />
I've decided to upload music from my very first music project "Metamorphic" to Last.fm. Well, most of that isn't really present in the 2nd album. I guess you can still call it power-pop, but there's definitely some homage to the Beatles, who may or may not have invented the genre used to describe bands like Superdrag. It opens up with "I'm Expanding My Mind", a pretty mellow song with a nice acoustic guitar, beatiful ambience, and perhaps bordeline country (slide guitars can be found). "Hellbent" brought Self to mind, but that's only because they share the same genre tag and song title. As far as the sound of the song goes, it's got the biggest Beatles influence in this album, also makes me think of Cheap Trick I guess (has a more 70s vibe to it at times). "Sold You An Alibi" has a unique clean guitar sound to it, and I like the lyrics John Davis uses ("sympathy fuck"? Awesome). "Do The Vampire" was supposed to be their hit song for this album, but as with every underrated 90s rock band that was signed to a major only to be ignored by the mainstream, that didn't really happen. But this song will get the QOTSA fans turning, since it's still pretty accessible and hard-rockin', along with tight drums. All of a sudden a piano comes out in "Amphetamine", so it kind of starts out like a ballad, later to have some bending guitars showing Superdrag's love for classic rock. "Bankrupt Vibration" is probably the most eclectic song in this album, with some acoustic guitar and percussion that makes you feel like your in the desert. Then it goes to some pounding drums and crunchy guitar. "Mr. Underground" showcases more instrumentation with some horns, but still holds the poppy sound from yours truly. More softness set in with "Annetichrist", and by now you'll probably notice how clever a lyricist John Davis is. It also gets a little shoegaze-y towards the end of the song, and retains that calmness found throughout this album. "She Is A Holy Grail" is what I could describe as a folky rock dirge, and it also kind of brings me back to listening to STP (you'll love Superdrag if your a fan of the Pilots). "Pine Away" is my personal favorite, made me think of Pinebender hence it's title, and it's not far off from that band besides being more mid-tempo. I feel like they capture everything found in this album with this song: indie, classic, little bit of shoegaze. "Shuck & Jive" is a fuzzy number that seems kind of political, and is very similar to their latest album. "Wrong Vs. Right Doesn't Matter" has a indie-pop opening only later to shift to a grungy sound, along with a solo in the middle. This album closes with "The Art Of Dying", featuring orchestration, middle-eastern guitar licks, more soloing, and of course Davis's calm but powerful lyrics. Like the Beatles? 90s rock? 70s rock? Classic Rock? Indie Rock? It's the melting pot of all of that my friend, pick it up!

P.S. I didn't really mention the bass or anything since I didn't notice it (obviously?), but I'm pretty sure if your a fan of clean and/or Beatles bass, it's there for ya... (your still an awesome bassist Tom Pappas!)

Links:
http://www.superdrag.com/news.htm
Head Trip In Every Key - Super...

Latest Listening- Roma 79

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 212px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_g9uqnEN8hoM/S2YS0GfCMhI/AAAAAAAAAEU/45fXplB-Nj8/s320/roma79.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433050686772359698" />

This is pretty much my new kind of thing I guess where I talk about new music stuff I've required and such.

Roma 79- The Great Dying (2005 Ascetic Records)

Got this in the mail on Wednesday, which was a bad day for me personally, so I didn't listen to this as soon as I had gotten it. But later on I uploaded it to my computer and gave it some more listens later through the week. Honestly I had listened to it already via Lala.com,and really liked it, but really wanted to own the tracks for unlimited streaming. I decided to just order it from Amazon for pretty cheap, along with the Superdrag album I'll go into later.

But anyway, I've been into Roma 79 ever since I downloaded the latest "Praise The Divide". Compared to TGD, PTD is much more mellow and synth arranged, where TGD is much more angular in most songs, featuring heavier guitar sounds and distorted bass. "Heads Down" keeps me thinking of the ole' guillotine with that drumline in the chorus, and it's all pretty good with kind of middle-eastern sounding guitar and Jeremy's signature vocals (which kind of reminds me of Keeley Davis from Engine Down, but not completely), and everytime the bass kicks in it gets more thick. "Disposed To Violate" has some build-up in the beginning, and then it gets pretty fast, and it was kind of shocking to hear Roma 79 go in this direction from what I had heard from PTD. It's pretty post punk, and probably the most distant from any other song Roma 79 has made. Reminds me of Traindodge if anything, except not as technical. "Kill The Sun" on the other hand is a little reminiscent of Riddle Of Steel guitar-wise, and even classic prog-rock sounding. "Gold" is what I would say the standout track in the whole album, and a good blueprint of their overall sound.
"4MO1" is the most chilled out song in TGD. Would I say that it's cabaret sounding? "Angel Message" is also pretty post-punk, and pretty versatile in structure, featuring a grooving-pop beginning, dischordant guitar line where Patfield says "exit left...exit right", and my favorite, a start-stop/palm-mute guitar bridge. Then comes 'the long song', known as "The Spin". It's pretty good though, more catchy than most lengthy songs I here. "Reprise" is basically, well, a synth-laden reprise of Heads Down I'm assuming. The last-song, the title-track, is original and thought out, with some slow but pounding guitar parts that could be appealing to fans of Jesu. Overall, Roma 79's mix of indie rock, shoegaze, post-punk, prog-rock, and synth pop is much better than what I've heard to be too 'repetitive' or 'going no where'. 'The Great Dying' is something you need to get if your a fan of any of those genres or are just getting into Ascetic Records material. The latter is where most of the fan-base is located obviously, but hopefully this could pop up in the lap of the former too, because this band is highly underrated!

Hope my first album review doesn't suck too bad.

Links!
http://www.roma79.com/news.php
http://www.myspace.com/roma79

The Great Dying - Roma 79

Levajura- Warship

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_g9uqnEN8hoM/S1uVfXjDHCI/AAAAAAAAADk/537wRFMJLHw/s320/Warship+copy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430098141854768162" />

http://www.mediafire.com/?honlny0zxic

1. I shall though, i shall...

As usual, I'll make updates on my current music ventures, so now is the time to do so:

-Gyoza 09: Should be out on this blog by the end of the month, features 4 songs. Call it a demo, call it an ep, whatever. If anything, it's nothing too special, but it's better than what I've done before. Promise, "Gyoza 10" will be better!

-Rock Lick Radio: The band I've been playing bass for since September has changed it's name to the aformentioned title of this bullet. We were supposed to record towards the beginning of the month, but thanks to the local snowfall, that has been postponed to a later and hopefully soonish date (thinking February). There's a whole albums worth of material we've got, and the plan is to release that album's worth as, well, a DEBUT ALBUM! For now, mr. low end here is going to release the 4 songs back when it was just 3 members without the bass and then recently named "The Common Browns". More talk about this garage punk/folk group later...

-Levajura: Currently on hiatus, at least from doing the original plan of making all the music electronically. With that said, there might be a chance that I'll do an acoustitronic-like thing with previous songs, and perhaps some new ones. Not entirely certain though.

-Wallmaster: Actually have tinkered with some ideas using my Big Muff and drop-d tuning. I still want to do something with this project, even though there's pretty much nothing I've put out yet.

So yes, that's the whole shin-dig right this moment. Hope to throw some awesome tunes out there this year, and hopefully more people will pay attention!

Before the good stuff....

Let me say some words about my stuff:

-LEVAJURA: New EP, "Warship", is coming out very soon, possibly this week. As far as everything after that, there won't be much from Levajura probably. Looks to be a hiatus?

-GYOZA: A new demo is officially coming out! It's simply entitled "Gyoza 09", and features pretty much all the stuff recorded on the 4-track this year. A new song, called "Detach", is also going to be streaming soon, and will be released on the demo. More from Gyoza is expected from 2010.

-WALLMASTER: Uh.....maybe a demo in January?

Also, all three Superlative Clamor artists have "signed" with local Morehead, Ky label Toothcomb Records. Farr, plan on making this blog even more devoted to music, not just my own! There's alot of focus on my projects Gyoza and Levajura on this blog, but what one (in this case 'you') should really pay close attention to for now is what I really think is incredible, inspiring music.

I pretty much live upon music, nothing else I do compares to the absolute devotion I have towards it! My favorite type of music would be underground rock, in other words "space rock", "post-hardcore", "hardcore", "progressive punk", "experimental metal", and for a good amount of time "pop". I also have followings to other things such as electronica, video game soundtracks, some movie soundtracks, classic rock, GOOD mainstream radio stuff, occasional guilty pleasures, noises, and other stuff both conventional and non-conventional. Some good points to start would be Cave In, HUM, Failure, The Casket Lottery, Small Brown Bike, sElf, Shiner, Jawbox, Traindodge Botch, Coalesce, Isis, Pelican, Stemage, Hammer No More The Fingers, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, and so much more. I have around 300-400 artists scrobbled on last.fm, so I listen to a bunch of stuff. So yeah, its pretty much my life to listen to a variety of artists, usually my favorite genre/style, and continue to read into the stories of each artist/band considering how much time I have and how devoted I am to the artist. I figured it was time to get it across to the best place I can right now, the world wide web (i.e. Internet, Firefox)

A plethora of it for sure, IT STARTS NOW!!!

p.s. They blended in rock, free-form jazz, and noisy fx to attain a sound hard to digest. They're broken up now, and the drummer works on his electronic solo work currently. Not sure what other alumni do...

Craw- Cleveland, Ohio math rock band with hard-edged prog-metal, similar to their next door neighbors Keelhaul. They formed around the start of the 90s, maybe enven around the time Gravitar did. In 1994, they put out 2 albums, both engineered by Steve Albini, their s/t debut and "Lost Nation Road". Then later in the decade they self released an album called "Map Monitor Surge", and again got help from Albini. By the time of their 4th release, they would have a new label (Hydra Head), new producer, and be without their founding guitarist. Much like the Cleveland bros from Keelhaul, they don't really tour. Semi-functional, but don't expect to see them live anytime soon.

Next video will be b-sides from 2 RCA space rockers...

Levajura- s/t

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AB2VOSEL

The debut full-length from Levajura.
